Program Summary: The goal of this training is to provide current information on safety strategies that can be used by workers who support youth and families in their homes and communities. Presenters will discuss self-awareness and setting healthy boundaries. They will also explain Routine Activity Theory used by law enforcement to identify potential opportunities for criminal activity. Finally, they will go over the NASW guidelines for outreach risk assessment, and discuss worker burnout and self-care.
Objectives – At the end of all 3 parts of this training, participants should be able to:
1. Explain how self-awareness and assessment can reduce safety risks.
2. Describe rapport building techniques to assist in creating healthy boundaries.
3. Discuss the importance of cultural competence while working in the community.
4. Enhance your ability to assess a person’s potential for violence and develop prevention strategies.
5. Assess risk management and protocols for safety.
6. Discuss Burnout and Self-Care for Outreach Workers.
Presenter:
Sophia Jones, Ph.D. is a Training & Consultation Specialist with Rutgers-UBHC Behavioral Research and Training Institute, for the Children's System of Care Training and Technical Assistance program. She has 12 years of experience in the behavioral health field. She brings seven years of experience from the New Jersey System of Care working with children and families within Middlesex County.
Rita Camarillo, LPC is a Training & Consultation Specialist with Rutgers-UBHC Behavioral Research & Training Institute for the Children’s System of Care Training Program. She has worked in the children’s behavioral health field since 2004 in different capacities including Mobile Response Crisis Intervention Specialist, Program Coordinator, Behavioral Assistant and Intensive In Community Clinician.
